The Claire McGill Luce
Western History Room
Western History Room has new hours!!
Tuesday through Saturday from noon - 5:00 PM
The Claire McGill Luce Western History Room provides access to two special collections that most universities would envy - two valuable collections donated to the library by two men who have since died: Walter McEwen, a Harney County rancher and Edward Gray, an author from Eugene who was fascinated with Southeastern Oregon. The collections include books on the exploration of the Northwest, complete sets of the Oregon Historical Quarterly and the Bancroft books.
Other information in the Western History Room includes oral histories, photos, genealogy resources, the Burns Times-Herald on microfilm and the bound newspapers for the last 10 years.
Sandra Crittenden is curator for the collection and is available to help library patrons from 2:00 to 4:00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. She assists those interested in looking through the one-of-a-kind collections, which are curated in a locked room. Because the books are not in circulation, they can only be accessed in the Western History Room under the supervision of Crittenden. Other resources such as the oral histories and newspapers are available to the public during regular library hours.
Crittenden encourages patrons using the Western History Room for the first time to make a list of books they are interested in accessing including author and title.
