SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
Harney County is home to the Claire McGill Luce Western History Room which provides access to two special collections that most universities would envy - valuable collections donated to the library by two men who have since died: Walter McEwen, a Harney County rancher and Edward Gray, an author from Eugene who was fascinated with Southeastern Oregon.
The collections include books on the exploration of the Northwest, complete sets of the Oregon Historical Quarterly and the Bancroft books, local historical publications and more.
Titles of publications available in the Western History Room are cataloged in the main library computerized catalog system. The books in the special collections are not in circulation and can only be accessed in the Western History Room.
A collection of over 250 soft cover booklets and pamphlets which are not cataloged in the SAGE catalog system are indexed and on file for public access.
Karen Nitz is the primary archivist for the collection and is available to help library patrons until 5pm during regular library hours. The Western History Room is open Saturdays and evenings by request.
