3D Printing FAQ

There are many open-source, free-to-use objects that creators have uploaded for folks to print on their own. Our own staff have found it useful to utilize these objects as a first step to understanding the process. We have several reputable websites listed below. For folks at the intermediate level who want to design their own items, we have resources for you too! Note: all of these websites are external and not affiliated with the HCL. These pages will be updated as we encounter more useful resources.

Please note that we are unable to print large objects and files must be submitted as a certain type. More information about that can be found on the Procedures and Policies Page.

Resources for Pre-Made 3D Designs

• UltiMaker Thingiverse - Makerbot's searchable design library community.
  
• Yeggi - Search engine for 3d printable models.
  
• Printables - Search engine for 3D printable models.
  

Programs for Your Own 3D Printing Files

• Tinkercad - Free, web based. A great option for beginners! 
  
• Blender - Free, software based. A great option for intermediate users who want to level up their skills. *We have this software installed on two public computers, please ask a staff member!
  
• Fusion 360 - An industry favorite. This is software for an advanced user. Free trial option but will cost money after.

Tutorials for Designing Your Own Files

• YouTube - YouTube is a great resource for learning all sorts of skills! Just type the name of the program that you would like to learn about and the word 'beginners tutorial' and see what results come up! Many different creators have different approaches, so if you aren't finding a tutorial useful, try a different video!
• Autodesk Instructables - A great option for how-to-make tutorials. Instructables is a community for people who like to make things. Come explore, share, and make your next project with us!
• Tinkercad Learn - Learn the basics of Tinkercad on their website.
  
• Blender Tutorials - Learn the basics of Blender on their website.
