3D Printing FAQ

This page contains the documents you'll need to familiarize yourself with in order to print your own objects! Please read the following documents, the Library 3D Printer Use Policy & the Library 3D Printer Procedure, before filling out the 3D Printing Request forms. Paper versions of these documents can be requested at the front desk.

Library 3D Printer Use Policy

Purpose
In keeping with our mission, "Honor our Past. Embrace our Future," Harney County Library is dedicated to providing our community with access to emerging technology and the tools to foster lifelong learning. Through this access we aim to inspire an interest in design and ignite curiosity about the endless opportunities that the future holds.
This policy outlines the guidelines for the safe and responsible use of the 3D printer, empowering our patrons to explore, create, and learn.

Policy
The Library’s 3D printer is available to the public to make three-dimensional objects based off digital files and printed using filament provided by the Library. The patron must provide the files, either using a USB device or URL provided on the 3D Printing Request Form.
  1. The Library’s 3D printer may only used for legal purposes. The printer is not to be used to create material that is:
    1. Prohibited by local, state, or federal law.
    2. Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others.
    3. Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for a library environment.
    4. In violation of another’s intellectual property rights. For example, the printer will not be used to reproduce material that is subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection.
  2. The Library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request.
  3. Printed objects must take less than 5 hours to print and be smaller than 6 inches wide by 6 inches long.
  4. Cost: 3D printing at the Library is currently free.
  5. A Harney County Library staff member will call you when your 3D print has been completed. If items printed from the 3D printer are not picked up within 7 days, projects become property of the Harney County Library and you forfeit your 3D printing privileges for 6 months.
  6. The Library is not liable for any malfunctions or misprints.
  7. Only designated Library staff or volunteers will have hands-on access to the 3D printer.
  8. Printing is on a first come, first serve basis.
  9. No 3D printed items should be used for food. PLA (3D printing filament) is not food safe.
  10. The library’s 3D printer is intended for educational, entertainment and prototyping purposes. The library does not provide access to 3D printers for the production or sale of goods. Assistance with the use of the 3D printer by library staff does not constitute knowledge, or acknowledgement, of any final use of the 3D object. Once in possession by the patron, the library expressly disclaims any and all personal injury or property damage caused by use or misuse of a 3D printed object.

3D Printing Procedures

  1. Creating your own design requires an advanced knowledge of 3D modeling software products. Video tutorials that accompany modeling programs can be useful. We have two public-use computers with the open-source program Blender on them (#6 & #8). Anyone can make use of our 3D printers, including those under the age of 18 with a parent’s signature.
    1. Any software may be used to create a design as long as the file can be saved in .stl or .gcode formats, are less than 25 MB, and measure in at no larger than 6 inches wide by six inches long.
    2. There are many websites that offer free, open-source files. An example would be ‘Thingiverse’.
  2. Fill out the 3D Printing Request Form and email or call Beryl at the Library (541-573-6670 or [email protected]) to make an appointment. Bring the form and your file (on a flash drive or emailed in advance).
    1. At the appointment, we will review your file and show you the filament options.
    2. File will be assessed and sliced. Depending on the quantity of requests, we can give you a general idea of when the print will be completed.
  3. A Library staff member will call or email you when the print has been completed and is ready for pickup. They will be stored on the holds shelf tagged with the patron’s name.
