CLAIRE McGILL LUCE WESTERN HISTORY ROOM
Popularly known as the Sagebrush Symphony Orchestra, this group of young musicians under the direction of Mary V. Dodge was the first organized children's orchestra of its kind in the country. Mary Dodge, with several of her Burns, Oregon pupils later formed the Portland Junior Symphony which has evolved into the world renowned Portland Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2010, Burns, Oregon celebrated the centennial anniversary of Mary Dodge's arrival to the city with a public PYP concert and re-creation of the iconic violin float, complete with local young musicians.
